Susan Mernit: April 2009 Archives

So I made the worm bin and I put some organic produce scaps in there. And then the lid got left off for several hours (don't ask) and it got flies.
UGH.
Lots of flies.
So we put it in the sun to see if that would cook the flies.
Nope.

I don't think worms and flies mix.
So.

Added more dry compost--newspapers--and a load of chicken manure--to the bin--and backed off.

Options seem to be:
Throw the whole ugly mess out somehow
Pray it turns into compos FAST and then restart as work bin.
Start new worm bin, leave this as compost bin.

Any ideas
Lettuce and arugula were a smash success, almost gone
Swiss chard coming in big
Carrots germinating
Acquired free buddellia and am about to plant
Need to get gravel for next set of containers
Need to set up containers then get seeds and plants
Planting:
  • Tomatoes
  • Egplants
  • Winter squash
  • Radishes
  • ???? (not sure yet...)
Just made a simple syrup lemonade from fresh meyer lemon's from a friends' garden and brown sugar/water, added some fresh mint from the garden to last night's glass.

I hsve been super busy with work projects, a good thing in this economy, but have been going out to the garden every morning to check things. The arugula has suddent exploded, and seems complete ready to eat, as does the red lettuce I planted about a month ago, The swiss chard is towering, but can go longer, I think. (This means I need to plant more lettuce and arugula so we stay in greens; thinking maybe planting more spinach as well).

However, the big thing is that I am going to make some more container beds and start planting the veggies crops--tomatoes (6-8 plants, complete with tomato cages and trellis), peppers, eggplant, squash, and some other things I have not yet figured out (what do we want to grow and eat? as opposed to buy)?

I am hoping to involve two friends who will get a key to our gate and come in and help water and work in exchange for a share of the bounty. Need to get them involved soon as well--it is going to get hot awfully suddenly and containers dry out,
